Albemarle falls to Patrick Henry

Albemarle did something few teams managed to do all season — slow down Patrick Henry.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, Patrick Henry returned the favor.

Albemarle fell 57-33 to Patrick Henry in Roanoke, losing control of the game late when they had to extend out to try and create some quick points. Patrick Henry was shooting too well to let that fly, and it pulled away in the fourth.

Albemarle scored just 10 points in the first half and shot 4-for-29 from the field, which offset the fact that the Patriots put the clamps on Patrick Henry before the break, holding the Roanoke school to just 21 points. Patrick Henry, who shoots extremely well from outside went without a 3-pointer until midway through the second half.

“It was a rough way to finish it out, but we accomplished a lot this season,” said Albemarle coach Greg Maynard.

Patrick Henry’s three quarters court trap created a lot of problems for Albemarle and led to a lot of turnovers. But AHS settled in during the third quarter of the Northwest Region quarterfinal, and cut the lead to seven. But Patrick Henry’s Marcus Banks buried a pair of 3-pointers as part of a run that quickly extended the lead out to 14.

Andrew Mann finished with nine points and eight rebounds in the loss while Jake Hendrix had a big night, scoring seven points and hauling in 15 rebounds, six of them offensive. Daiquan West finished with five assists but faced a tough matchup against a tall Patrick Henry backcourt.

Albemarle’s season ends with the loss.
