Albemarle field hockey snags a win

Albemarle High’s field hockey team is picking up a little steam again.

After losing a number of games in overtime in Commonwealth District play, the Patriots scooped up a 2-1 victory over Riverbend on the road Tuesday night, with a pair of goals from Langley Sloan and Becky Johnson.

Sloan struck first off a Becky Johnson/Kendall Coffman combo assist, a quick pay off for coach E.A. Jackson’s decision to move Sloan, the usual right back, up to help bolster her attack at forward. Moving Sloan up put Sarah Vrhovac, a freshman, at right back, but the gamble paid off well.

Sloan went on to return the favor with an assist to Johnson for the Patriots’ second goal.

Shelby Penn scored Riverbend’s loan goal as Albemarle goalie Cate Johnson stopped 93 percent of the shots she faced.

Albemarle moves to 3-6 on the year and 2-5 in the Commonwealth District.
