Albemarle volleyball sweeps Powhatan

Albemarle volleyball is on an early roll in its first trip through the Jefferson District, rolling 3-0 over Powhatan to knock off another Jefferson District power just a week after sweeping Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County.

Sarah Woods led the Patriots with 11 kills, connecting on more than 60 percent of her attacks. Deal and Brown had eight kills each. Paige Hanssen finished with four kills and connected on half her attacks. Ellie Benning led the way with 30 assists.

The Patriots and Indians had never faced off, and Albemarle won the first game 25-23 in a back and forth battle, with Powhatan grabbing a 21-20 lead before Albemarle bounced back and took a 23-22 advantage on a Deal kill. A Brown finish to the left corner and a Deal ace finished off the game and gave Albemarle a 1-0 lead.

Game two went back and forth again with Albemarle pulling away to win 25-18 after building a 17-14 lead.

Powhatan grabbed a 5-2 lead in game three, but Albemarle bounced back to grab a 25-19 lead, ignited by a Chelsea Woodfolk block.

Albemarle (9-3, 3-0) hosts Charlottesville Thursday.
