Albemarle wrestling’s Edwards takes second in region advances to state meet

Albemarle’s wrestling team competed at the Region 5D tournament Saturday and the Patriots have one wrestler who earned the chance to move on and compete in the state tournament in Virginia Beach.

By virtue of a pin of Ian Huffstickler of Stafford, Albemarle senior Andrew Edwards is headed to the state tournament after taking second in the Region 5D tournament. Edwards was the 182-pound runner-up after losing a tight 7-5 decision to Remus Montalvo of Brooke Point.

In a non-pandemic year, the Patriots would’ve also qualified Grant Mullins at 132 pounds who took third, Ben Vales who took fourth at 145, Jasper Hawkins who was fourth at 195 and Sutton Veliky who took fourth at 152, but this season only the top two wrestlers in each region advance to the state meet.
