Basketball roundup 12.28.14: STAB girls, Buckingham boys fall

St. Anne’s-Belfield girls basketball is taking on some top notch competition at the Boo Williams Summer League Holiday Tournament.

The Saints got started in the Gold Division Saturday and fell 50-31 to Princess Anne, an unbeaten Virginia Beach squad that’s the reigning Group 5A champion, its third state title in six years. Princess Anne had been in the Group AAA title game for five-straight years from 2009-2013 before realignment.

Bri Tinsley finished with 12 points and four rebounds for the Saints while Mailynn Steppe checked in with eight points and Ashley Taylor had seven. Steppe, Sierra Smith and Emily Battle had three blocks each, with Smith also coming up with six boards.

But STAB struggled to contain the explosive Princess Anne squad and overcome 15 turnovers as a team.

The loss is the first on the season for the Saints who are now 6-1. They’ll play Central Bucks West Monday as they continue through the tournament bracket.

Buckingham splits games in Rustburg tournament

Buckingham’s boys basketball team beat William Campbell on the first day of the Rustburg Christmas tournament and then fell to Rustburg Saturday in the tournament final.

In the 55-45 win over William Campbell Friday, Hassan Swann’s double double of 17 points and 13 rebounds paced the Knights underneath while Leon Ragland also put together a complete game with 23 points, six rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists. Michael Allen had seven rebounds on the night and Brycen Newby had thre rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Against Rustburg Saturday, the Knights fell 52-51, rallying from nine down to take the lead three different times in the final two minutes. The Red Devils answered the call each time however and kept regaining the lead.

Rustburg hit a pair of free throws with three seconds to play, allowing the Red Devils to pick up the narrow win.

B.J. Gough finished with 17 points to lead the Knights while Tariq Gough chipped in 10 on the night.
