Berry to take over as AD at Covenant

Covenant School’s athletic department has its newest leader.

Brooks Berry has a wide-range of experience as a basketball coach and player and he’ll be putting it to use as the new athletic director at Covenant, taking over for interim-AD Dave Rocco, who kept the seat warm after Doug Smethurst stepped down last year.

“Coach Berry brings to Covenant a wealth of experience in coaching and athletic administration,” said Headmaster George Sanker in a press release from the school. “In addition, he will be a great role model and mentor for students, and he possesses the ability to build relationships and partnerships throughout the community.”

Berry will join Covenant this summer when he steps down from coaching post-graduate basketball and administrative duties as Director of Financial Aid at Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA). Berry is a graduate of FUMA and earned a bachelor’s in Sports Management from West Virginia University, where he was a stand-out on the WVU basketball team and a three-time All- Academic Big East selection.

He has served as an assistant basketball coach at Charleston Southern University and worked in Virginia Commonwealth’s athletic department.

“We are very excited about Brooks’ ability and passion to guide our young athletes as they develop, not only in middle and high school, but also as they pursue athletics at the collegiate level,” said Rich Klein, Covenant parent, former coach and member of Covenant’s Board of Directors.

Rocco will continue as Covenant’s head football coach and will also resume the role of Assistant Athletic Director he held before Smethurst stepped down.

Covenant will introduce Berry Tuesday morning at Covenant.
