Buckingham boys win season opener

With Kevin Bolden’s graduation and Caleb White’s transfer to Virginia Episcopal, Buckingham is going to need to find a lot of rebounding on its revamped roster.

Tarian Ayers and Cam Johnson got them off to a solid start in the Knights’ season opener Tuesday night in a 70-35 victory over James River District opponent Nottoway.

Ayers and Johnson both posted double doubles, with Ayers pulling down 10 rebounds to go with 13 points and eight assists while Johnson posted 11 boards and 19 points.

Ayers’ eights assists was an excellent sign for the Buckingham offense, and he wasn’t the only one who was dishing out solid passes all night as L.A. Briley finished with seven assists on a 10-point night. Ayers also came up with three steals.

Timmy Randolph also had a solid game with nine points and six boards. Kyree Koonce snagged three steals.

The Knights jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Buckingham will take on Prince Edward County Friday in a tournament.
