Playing Randolph Henry for the fourth and final time this year, Buckingham County was forced into extra innings in the first round of the Region B Division 2 playoffs. Thanks to a pair of miscues and a big single from Libby Morris, the Knights inched closer to the possibility of a Group A berth with a 1-0 win in eight innings on Monday.
Morris and the Buckingham defense were on point from start to finish and paired together to post the team’s sixth shutout this season. Morris struck out 14 batters and gave up only hits.
To pick up the win, the Knights got a leadoff base runner in the bottom of the eighth on an error. A sacrifice bunt and then a fielder’s choice that did not produce an out gave Buckingham runners on the corners with no outs. Morris took care of the rest with a walk off single.
The Knights advance to play Appomattox on the road at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the next round of the tournament.
