After 13 games, it’s finally over.
Charlottesville High snapped a frustrating losing streak spanning all of 2010 and the first three games of 2011 by knocking off Culpeper High on the road 41-13 Friday night.
“I got the ice-cold Gatorade bath and everything, it was great to get a win for the guys,” said Charlottesville coach Eric Sherry. “But we don’t want this to be out of the ordinary.”
That Black Knights put together a solid defense performance and the offense showed some imagination, breaking out of its usual triple option style to exploit Culpeper’s man-to-man coverage on the boundaries. Charlottesville quarterback Mason Sherry threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns.
One of those tosses broke the game wide open in the closing seconds of the first half. After forcing a punt the Black Knights drove to around the 25-yardline and Sherry connected on a fade with Daquan Jones to push its halftime advantage to 28-7.
“I pushed these kids really hard this week, and we could all sense it here, we could sense they were ready to play some football,” Sherry said. “They just executed really well.”
Wynter Warren took over at fullback and rushed for 85 yards, loosening up the Culpeper defense by hitting the hole hard on each and every carry. That helped get Chris Thurston, who returned to the lineup, and Rashard Davis into a groove too.
The defense held Culpeper to just under 100 yards of total offense according to Sherry, putting together the Black Knights best performance so far.
“Defensively, we played about as well as we could’ve played,” Sherry said.
Charlottesville will face a tall task against an explosive Liberty-Bealeton team next Friday in a road contest before moving into Jefferson District play the following week.
