Courtland runs past Louisa County

Louisa County struck first Friday night against Courtland, with Jeremy Jackson scoring to give the Lions an early lead.

But that was it for Louisa as Courtland pounded out a big night on the ground en route to a 35-6 victory over the Lions.

Courtland’s Brandon Mason led that 243-yard rushing attack with 114 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries. Mason’s 51-yard scoring run midway through the second quarter put Courtland ahead for good. Anton Jenkins, Darien Grant and Joe Tyson all also got in on the act with Jenkins scoring twice while picking up 58 yards.

Eric Washington provided enough balance for Courtland in the passing game, going 4-for-8 on the night for 96 yards including a 40-yard toss to Chris Carpenter for a touchdown just before halftime.

Like in the Lions’ season opener with Eastern View, turnovers cost the Lions, with a pair of interceptions helping Courtland control the clock throughout.

Still, Louisa outgained Courtland offensively with 354 total yards to the Cougars’ 339 yards, though uncharacteristically they did a lot of the damage through the air. Zack Jackson was 11 for 16 for 179 yards, finding Deion Johnson six times for 121 yards. Jackson also rushed for 97 yards on 17 touches.

Kyle Anderson paced the Louisa defense by getting in on nine tackles, while Jackson manage eight on the night. But the Lions’ defense didn’t create many negative plays for the Courtland offense, coming up with just one tackle for a loss.

Louisa. now sitting at 1-2, gets a bye week this week, giving the Lions two weeks to prepare for a huge Jefferson District opener at home on September 21 with Monticello.
