Covenant boys tennis continues title defense with semifinal win

Covenant boys tennis had its work cut out for it Friday when the Eagles took on No. 3-seed Hampton Roads Academy in the VISAA D2 state semifinals at Boar’s Head.

But the No. 2-seeded Eagles efficiently took care of business, grabbing a 4-2 lead during singles before closing the match out with a win at No. 2 doubles, clinching a spot in the state title match with a 5-2 win.

The Eagles, who won the title in 2017, leaned on their depth in the ladder, winning at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to grab that 4-2 lead. No. 3 Ben Grant won 10-4, No. 4 Robert Wood won 10-4, No. 5 Bryson Alley won 10-2 and Guilio Degiorgis won 10-4 at No 6 singles. To clinch, Wood and Alley teamed up and won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.  Andrew Carson battled at No. 1 singles and came close to giving the Eagles a fifth win in singles before falling 10-7. No. 2 Alex Vangelopoulos fell 10-3 at No. 2 singles.

Covenant will get a shot at the school’s eighth boys tennis team title Saturday at 4 p.m. against Steward at Raintree Swim and Tennis Club in Richmond.
