Covenant girls lacrosse cruises past Miller 14-1 in home opener

After dropping their season opener at Steward in a narrow 13-11 defeat last week, Covenant girls’ lacrosse returned home on Thursday afternoon to face Miller School. It seemed that some home cooking was just what the Eagles needed. Covenant led wire-to-wire in a blowout 14-1 victory over Miller.

“I think they that were super excited to start playing in front of their own crowd,” said Covenant coach Colleen Norair.

It was the first home game for Covenant in over a year.

“It felt really good, I’ve been waiting to play here for a really long time,” said Poindexter, an 8th grader who scored four goals, dished out two assists and picked up six ground balls in the game.

Covenant scored the game’s first eight goals before Miller got their lone goal of the game with five minutes remaining in the first half. Covenant got a lot of offense by taking advantage of scoring opportunities on fast breaks and in transition. At halftime, Covenant led 9-1.

“We’ve been working our butts off on our transition, our passing, talking, communicating,” Poindexter said.

After tallying 15 saves in their opening game loss at Steward, freshman goalie Katy Varaska saw a very limited number of shots come her way. Varaska recorded five saves and allowed just one goal while Erin Flynn made three saves in relief of Varaksa.

“She’s just phenomenal,” said Norair of her goalie’s play.

When Miller was able to gain possession, they had difficulty clearing the ball out of their own zone. Poindexter scored her fourth goal after intercepting a pass from Miller’s goalie and shooting on the open net to score the first goal of the second half.

Freshman Reese Dalton also tallied four goals, three in the first half and one in the second while sophomore Lina Touririne had two goals and Caroline Thompson finished with a hat trick. Clearly, the moment was not too big for Covenant’s younger players.

“I think we’re gonna dominate as a team,” said Poindexter. “I think this is going to be a really great year for us.”

Up next, the Eagles travel to play Chatham Hall on Tuesday, April 13th at 4:30 p.m.
