Covenant ignores weather, heads to Division II final four

You’ve got to give it to the parents who maintain Covenant’s baseball field. Somehow, someway, with schools across the area postponing games — particularly those on the diamond — left and right, Covenant got to play their state semifinal baseball game.

Even better for those parents, the Eagles rewarded that work with a monster win.

Despite a start delayed by over an hour, Covenant ousted Hampton Roads Academy from the playoffs with a 7-2 victory in the Division II state quarterfinals. The No. 3 seeded Eagles now head to Shepherd Stadium in Petersburg Friday for the state semifinals.

Lee Coppock picked up the win on the mound, with Sean Rutherford earning the save. Rutherford was also strong at the plate, knocking in three RBIs including a home run. Jesse Getchell posted a 4 for 4 night at the plate and Clark Crutchfield brought home a pair of runs and went 1 for 3.

Covenant will face No. 2-seed Steward in the semifinals. The Spartans edged out Christchurch 5-3 in their quarterfinal Tuesday.
