Early lead helps propel Flucos to victory over Bulldogs

The Fluvanna Boys basketball team traveled to Goochland Friday night looking to open up the Jefferson District slate at 1-0. Using a big early lead and holding off a late Bulldog push, the Flucos took the game 68-57.

“Probably the best defense we’ve played in two years as far as doing what we’re supposed to do as a team defense, we executed our press really well and really happy with our overall game,” said Fluvanna coach Heath Bralley. “We need to work on in-game situations where we have a lead a little bit, but I’m really pleased.”

The Flucos took a lead early on in the game and never let it go, taking an 18-9 advantage after the first quarter. The pressure and pace of play Flucos brought out caused immediate struggles for the Bulldogs who were forced into multiple turnovers. Kobe Edmonds led the way for the Flucos, scoring eight points in the quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same, as the Flucos kept pushing with their press and scoring from all levels. Tyler Coleman had seven of his 12 points in the quarter for the Flucos.  For the Bulldogs, JJ Cox scored five of his 13 points to lead the team. But the Bulldogs continued to struggle with the Fluco press, as they ended the half with a 37-23 lead.

Offensively, the Flucos continued to score from all over the place, as they extended their lead in the third.  Edmonds led the way once again putting up eight of his 26 points on the night to lead all scorers.

“We came out firing from everywhere, making layups, finishing, playing good defense, we played one of the best defensive games I’ve seen in the last four years here, we turned the ball over a bit but we’ll work on that,” said Edmonds.

As much as they had struggled in the game, Goochland kept fighting, and trimmed the deficit a bit in the fourth.  JD Mills and Gabe Liptak provided a lift for the Bulldogs, both providing nine points.

In the end however, it was still the Flucos who came out on top.  Another performance that gave the Flucos a boost came from Lance Bruce who had 11 points.

After this, the Flucos and Bulldogs both travel to Lord Botetourt to play in the Bob Johnson Classic.  The Bulldogs will look to regroup against Narrows, while the Flucos will be playing against Salem.
