Field hockey roundup: Monticello edges Kettle Run in OT

Monticello field hockey’s Evie Maxwell didn’t even have to look up to see senior Kathryn Deane when she corralled a loose ball between the top of the circle and midfield.

“I just knew she was there knowing Kat,” Maxwell said. “I knew if I pushed it forward someone would be there and the person with the most speed was definitely there.”

Maxwell uncorked a perfectly placed drive downfield right toward Deane, who was streaking down field. Deane wasted little time and buried it in the back of the goal early in overtime, lifting fourth-seeded Monticello to a 3-2 victory over No. 5 Kettle Run in the Conference 23 quarterfinals.

“We transitioned perfectly and we were all working together and communicating,” Deane said. “It just worked out for us.”

In what’s been an up and down season for the Mustangs, Deane finishing off the win was a huge boost for the Mustangs.

“It was amazing, I’ve actually coached Kat since she was a freshman on JV so it’s amazing to see her come all this way and to see everybody’s hard work pay off,” said Monticello coach Katie Martin. “It was a beautiful moment.”

It was a huge turn of events too as the Mustangs had to re-focus for overtime after surrendering a two-goal lead that they held most of the game when Kettle Run’s Laura O’Toole and Morgan Rodgers scored essentially back to back goals with under 10 minutes to play. The run erased the Mustangs’ 2-0 lead they’d held since well before halftime after Deane and fellow senior Siena Pike scored in the first half. When the game headed to overtime and entered the 7v7 format, however, that played back into the hands of the speedy, well-prepared Mustangs.

“We’ve been conditioning the whole season and we knew that we were the overall better-conditioned team and we just had to keep on our feet, recover and have each other’s backs,” Deane said. “And we had that.”

The Mustangs advance to take on top-seeded James Monroe in the Conference 23 semifinals for the right to advance to the regional tournament Tuesday evening. James Monroe beat Louisa County 17-0 Monday evening.
