Flucos rush to first district win against Mustangs

Fluvanna football came into this matchup against Monticello looking for their first District win of the season.

Not only did they earn that win, they were able to re-establish themselves on the ground, rushing for 314 yards as a team on the way to a 28-21 victory, and earning themselves a Saturday morning pancake and waffle breakfast thanks to rushing for over 300 yards.

“I think that’s what we hang our hat on anyway, our kids know that we’re gonna line up and try to run the ball at you every week,” said Fluvanna coach Mike Morris.

The Flucos came out with that mindset from the start, beginning the game with a nearly nine-minute drive that stalled short of the goaline. The defense however came out and forced a quick three-and-out to give the Flucos the ball back, where the first quarter came to a quick end.

The offense started to get things going in the second quarter, as with 10:08 left in the quarter Owen Leydig powered his way into the endzone to give the Flucos a 6-0 lead. Leydig ended the night with 12 carries for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

“We watched a lot of film on them and we knew that we had to attack their linebackers and our o-line performed and blocked like crazy, our line carried us today,” said Leydig.

The Mustang offense however did not take long to respond, as Matt Dixon found Brandon Herring on a 49-yard touchdown pass with 6:57 left in the half to help tie things up at 6-6. That score remained the same for the rest of the first half.  Dixon ended the night going 5 for 9 with 79 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while Herring caught two passes for 51 yards and a score.

In the second half, it seemed like the Flucos were beginning to take control. With 5:32 left in the third, Leydig rushed for his second touchdown and then found Jacob Seymore on the two-point try to make it a 14-6 game.  Then, on their second drive of the half, Eisryell Johnson took a run 18 yards to give the Flucos another score, making it 20-6 and giving the Flucos all the momentum.  Johnson ended the night with 14 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns, and Chase Paschall added 17 carries for 102 yards in another key performance.

The Mustangs kept fighting however, and with 4:32 left in the game Dixon found Miles Fraser for the score, and Herring on the 2-point conversion to make it a 20-14 game.  But then the Flucos marched down the field, and Johnson put the game away with a touchdown to help give his team a 28-14 lead.  The Mustangs made things interesting late with a Chris Carter kickoff return for a touchdown, but being down 14 that late proved to be too much as the Flucos held on for the 28-21 win.

The Flucos move on to play at Orange next week, while the Mustangs will look to regroup at home against Goochland to try to earn their first win of the season.
