Fluvanna baseball wins two in Saturday doubleheader

Fluvanna County baseball got off to a great start last week and capped the week with a pair of victories in a Saturday doubleheader with a talented Central Virginia Home School squad.

The Flucos won 8-2 and then 4-0 Saturday to complete a 3-1 opening week of the season.

In game one, Zach Crawford threw a complete game and Mason Berringer provided the support at the plate with a 2 for 3, three RBI night. Brock Harris also got in on the act with a 2 for 3 outing that included an RBI while Cody Herndon went 1 for 1 with a two-run double.

In the second game, Johvan Burton went the distance on the mound for the Flucos. Sam Turner provided the offense with a 2 for 2, RBI performance while Austin Foster went 1 for 2 with a pair of RBI. Fluvanna scored all four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Flucos’ other two games this week were an 11-1 victory over Goochland and a 14-10 loss to Spotsylvania. Fluvanna controlled the game with Spotsylvania early but melted down late. Turner finished that game with six RBI including a two-run homerun and a triple.

Against Goochland, the Flucos managed to wait out the Bulldogs’ starter Austin Goyne who was strong in the first few innings, striking out eight while surrendering just a single run. Fluvanna got going in the fifth after Goyne left the game, scoring five in the fifth and another five in the seventh.

The Flucos learned a lot about what they’ve got in the fold this year during the week.

“Jalen Harrison has been all over the basepaths and Brock Harris has been drawing a lot of walks,” said Fluvanna coach Mike Sheridan.

Fluvanna takes on Spotsylvania in a rematch on the road Tuesday before hosting Goochland Friday.
