Fluvanna girls beat Monticello to win second in a row

Fluvanna County’s girls basketball team built a sizeable lead with a strong first quarter Friday and kept Monticello at bay from there, winning 48-34 over the Mustangs who were opening up the season on the road.

The Flucos jumped out 11-2 in the first quarter, Alana Carter-Johnston finished with 17 points for the Flucos, doing some damage from the charity stripe with a 7-for-11 night at the line. She started 0-for-4 at the line before connecting on her next seven.

Beyond Carter-Johnston attacking the basket and drawing fouls, it was a balanced offensive effort for the Flucos, with Aniah Webb notching eight, KeKe Davis-Heinrich with seven and Tatyana Turner with six. Allyson Crother chipped in five.

Monticello countered with 13 points from Abby Shell and 12 from Dylan Wood while Katelyn Williams had seven. The Mustangs couldn’t shake off that slow start.

Both squads face a quick turn around with Monticello heading across town to battle with Albemarle while the Flucos will travel to Crozet to take on Western Albemarle.
