Goochland baseball gets back on track against Monroe

Both teams had little trouble putting the ball in play. In fact, there were no shortage of deep fly balls or hard hit ground balls. But the Goochland defense had little trouble coming up with plays, and conversely, a young William Monroe defense struggled in the second inning allowing the Bulldogs to pick up a 8-1 road win.

“A win is good and I thought we hit pretty well,” said Goochland coach Wes Farkas. “But defensively I thought we played pretty well.”

Lonnie Johnson threw strikes for the Bulldogs, and while the Greene Dragons made contact, the pitcher’s defense was behind him in all six innings he pitched.

Goochland made the most of Monroe’s fielding and throwing errors in the first two innings, tagging a run on the board in the top of the first and getting out to a 5-0 lead in the second thanks in part to an RBI single from Scott Ragland and an RBI double from Colby Carter.

Both offenses struggled in the middle of the game until the two squads traded a run each in the sixth. The Bulldogs increased a five run lead to seven in the top of the seventh and held on for the win to end a two game skid.

After Danny Morris came through against Western previously in the week, Monroe had a solid outing from Ryan Morris and Jordan Gentry, but could not shake off the mistakes in the field.

“We had two sophomores on the mound and I was very proud of the way they threw the ball,” said Dragons coach Mark Arrington.

However, while the Monroe bats made contact, the energy was low as the Goochland defense took care of business and kept the Dragons from scratching out a rally.

“I think that’s a sign of a young team,” Arrington said.

Goochland (9-3, 5-2 Jefferson) hosts Caroline on Monday at 6 p.m.

Monroe (3-9, 2-4) travels to Monticello on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
