JD baseball roundup: Monroe, Fluvanna, Monticello and Goochland all win

William Monroe inched closer to clinching the Jefferson Distrct as it took a hotly contested game from Louisa County on Friday night, 3-2.

The Dragons have had some close games, but this was the closest since they topped Goochland in extra innings at the end of March. The Lions had a runner on second base with two outs, and a single from Jay Carter looked like it would bring Jake Seay home from second. It looked that way until left fielder Michael Thompson cranked the ball into catcher Logan Forloines who was able to apply the tag and the game clinching 21st out.

Lamar Nelson picked up the win with his five innings of work to improve to 4-0. Nelson struck out five batters. Ryan Morris earned the save with his job in the seventh, his fifth.

Louisa took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off a Christian Buckler single and RBI double from Seay, who also was the starting pitcher for the Lions.

Monroe answered in the third with a solo homerun from Zach Duprey to left-centerfield. Then in the bottom of the fourth Dragons took a 2-1 lead on a Logan Forloines double followed by another double from Cody Thacker.

The Lions knotted the score back up on a pair of doubles, the first from Carter and the second of Buckler in the top of the fifth. Once again though, Monroe responded. In the bottom of the inning thanks to a triple from Jacob Hirtz followed by a passed ball.

Louisa (5-6, 2-5) travels to Western Albemarle on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Monroe (12-1, 9-0) is now two wins from clinching the JD. The Dragons travel to Charlottesville on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Flucos edge Warriors, maintain pace

As they look to give Monticello and the rest of the district that’s chasing William Monroe a run for the money, Fluvanna County picked up a crucial win over Western Albemarle, 4-3, thanks to an RBI single from Josh Barringer.

Fluvanna worked its way out of two bases loaded jams. Offensively Brock Harris was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. TJ Dudley also had a 2-hit day and drove in a run.

Western had a tough night on the bases ad they stranded 13 runners. Fluvanna walked 12 Warrior runners and hit another with a pitch.

For the Warriors, Scott Wakely had a 2-run single that scored Ethan Lohr and Tanner Knight. Mitchell Parks had an RBI and a stolen base.

The Warriors (3-8, 3-4) host Louisa on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Fluvanna (5-8, 4-3) is back over .500 in the JD and trails Monticello by a half-game. The Flucos can leap frog the Mustangs as they face them next on Tuesday on the road at 7:30 p.m.

Mustangs bounce back

It was a tough start to the week for Monticello with losses to Goochland and Monroe to open the week, but the Mustangs rebounded just in time. With the Fluvanna close behind in the standings, Monticello was able to keep hold of second place in the Jefferson District with a 3-2 win over Orange County on Friday.

Tyler Moneymaker threw a complete game win for the Mustangs. Max Mann and Connor Lilley had multiple hit games with two hits each. Devin Dickerson had a double and a run scored. Josh Malm also had a hit and scored a run as well.

Monticello (8-5, 6-3) faces Fluvanna on Tuesday for sole possession of second on Tuesday at home at 7:30 p.m.

Bulldogs rally in seventh

Goochland picked up a big win over Monticello to start its week, and avoided squandering it on Friday with its 3-2 win over Charlottesville.

Cody Johnson drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a triple. He was 2 for 4.  Teammate Ben Swecker was also 2 for 4 and had a run scored and a double. Scott Ragland went 1 for 3 with a double, RBI and a run.

For Charlottesville, Eli Haden was 1 for 2 with a solo homerun.

The Black Knights (1-11, 1-8) face Monroe at home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
