Local wrestlers punch ticket to state tournament in Region 3C wrestling

It takes a lot of work in wrestling to earn a trip to the state tournament — you get one shot on one day in the region tournament to finish fourth or better and grab a state tournament berth.

Several local wrestlers were up to the task Saturday in the Region 3C tournament at Liberty Bedford.

Fluvanna County vaulted four wrestlers into the state tournament, with Shawn Metcalf’s third place at 152 pounds leading the way for the Flucos. Jariq Henson, Aiden Valentine and Tyler Stoy each took fourth place at 126 pounds, 138 pounds and 160 pounds each.

Western Albemarle qualified three different wrestlers for the state tournament, led by Collin Castrina and Sam Duska finishing as the runner-up in the region at 126 pounds and 160 pounds respectively.

Castrina (20-4) won his quarterfinal match 7-0, then pinned his semifinal opponent from Spotswood before falling in the final. Duska won his quarterfinal 11-2, then edged his semifinal foe 3-2 and lost 14-5 in the title match.

Max Morrison finished fourth at 182 pounds to round out the Warriors’ trio of qualifiers while also picking up his 100th career victory.

Charlottesville qualified two wrestlers for the state tournament. The Black Knights got a boost from the lower weights with Aiden Lewandowski taking second in the region at 120 pounds while Pyi Khant took third at 113 pounds.

Lewandowski pinned his quarterfinal and semifinal opponents before falling in the championship match.
