Louisa stays unbeaten with win over Fluvanna

Louisa County’s girls basketball team was back in action just one night after honoring their seniors in a win over Chancellor, hosting Jefferson District rival Fluvanna.

The Lions were no worse for the wear, beat the Flucos 77-57 to stay undefeated on the season and improving to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in District play.

“The way that we’re gelling right now, I mean some of these girls are seeing things on the floor that I don’t even see on the sidelines, ” said Louisa coach Nick Schreck. “(They’re) making the extra pass, trusting their teammates, and it’s ending up in wide open shots for us.”

The Lions came out firing on all cylinders right from the start, beginning the game on an 11-0 run to give them a big early lead over the Flucos. Sylvie Jackson played a large role in that run, scoring five of those first 11 points. That was just the start of the night for Jackson, as she led the Lions in scoring with 27 points. Olivia McGhee and Emion Byers also had big nights for the Lions, posting 18 and 14 points in the win.

After the early run, Louisa didn’t take their foot off the gas pedal, scoring from all levels and showing some defensive intensity creating turnovers that turned into more offense.

“It’s all a team effort, we have tons of people scoring, and our defense turns into offense, and it feels good to play like that,” said Jackson.

While they were down by a large margin most of the game, the Flucos kept battling, doing their best to fight their way back when they could. Alana Carter-Johnston helped lead the way with 17 points, and made multiple plays with her passing. Taty Turner and Khyariah Davis-Heinrich also put up 10 points apiece. However, any time the Flucos tried to get something going, the Lions had the answers, leading to their comfortable victory.

“I’ve said at the beginning of the year, for me my job is sometimes to just get out their way and let them play,” said Schreck. “Tonight was one of those nights where any time we try to run a set, it wasn’t that successful but when I let them just kinda go and play and play basketball the way they know how, we were getting really good looks out of it.”

After tonight’s contest, the Lions will hit the road to play at Albemarle on Friday, while the Flucos head to William Monroe on Wednesday.
