Monroe boys outlast Clarke in overtime

Austin Batten’s pair of 3-pointers helped William Monroe survive in the fourth. Six quick points from Markel Williams in overtime took care of the rest. And as such the Dragons started off 2012 by keeping their perfect Bull Run District record in tact with a 65-59 win over the Eagles.

“That’s one of the better teams we’ve faced so far,” said Monroe coach Mike Maynard. “We thought we had a chance to win it there in there fourth but Markel Williams, he was huge in overtime and got us off to a great start (in overtime).”

Williams went off for 25 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the victory. Guard Gary Morris added 13 points to go with his five assists. Batten finished with 11 points.

Monroe (7-4, 4-0) plays Central Woodstock on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
