Monroe boys take down Manassas on the road

Thanks in large part to a trio of players in double figures and a solid start in the first quarter, William Monroe rolled past Manassas Park on the road 67-40.

“We came out and took control,” said Dragons coach Mike Maynard. “Our press worked really well and so we were able to get them to commit some turnovers and turn those into easy baskets. The intensity was there tonight, but thing I was happiest with was how unselfish we were with the basketball.”

Monroe rolled out to an 11-point lead to close out the first quarter, and momentum carried over into the second as the visitors found a way to double the deficit going into halftime. And in the second half, little changed as the Dragons held serve to wrap up the win.

Markel Faulkner finished with a double-double, leading Monroe with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Guards Jordan Gentry and Gary Morris were close behind with 14 and 13 respective points. Austin Batten was the leading distributor, tallying nine assists. Markel Williams had five points to go with eight rebounds.

The Dragons (5-1, 2-0 Bull Run District) step out of district play on Saturday with a home game against Charlottesville at 6:30 p.m.
