Monticello boys coast past Louisa County

Monticello got a big first quarter from Jahvon Shleton and cruised from there Tuesday night, picking up a 71-50 win over Louisa County.

Shelton exploded early with 17 first quarter points to help stake Monticello to a 29-11 first quarter lead. That early lead allowed Monticello to withstand a barrage of 3-pointers from Louisa senior Jamal Robinson. Robinson hit six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 22 points on the night.

Monticello had more offensive balance than the Lions. Shelton quieted after the explosive first and notched 19 points on the night while Denzel Terry hit four 3-pointers en route to a 16-point outing. Jhalil Mosley checked in with 13 to round out the Mustangs in double figures.

Sam Calasuannu did notch eight points for Monticello.

The win gives Monticello more momentum going into a rivalry clash Friday with Charlottesville at home while Louisa hits the road to take on Fluvanna County the same night.
