Monticello girls hoops picks up big win over Spotswood

Monticello’s girls basketball team got the year started off in a big way Friday night, upending the two-time defending Group 3A champions 58-45 on the road.

The Mustangs, who fell to the Blazers in the 2013 Division 3 semifinals, trailed after the first quarter but by halftime they’d built a five-point lead at 27-22 that they never relinquished.

“(It’s) just one game and I told them tonight the goal was to get better,” said Monticello coach Josh McElheny. “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire group tonight and the effort all 12 of them put in.”

Monticello’s core of Meghan Comer, Molly Shephard, Kiana Scott and Reagan Roberts accounted for 56 of the squad’s 58 points. Comer went for 21 points while Shephard finished with 18. Roberts put together a nine-point night and Scott finished with eight. Statistics weren’t available after the game, but McElheny indicated that Roberts, Shephard and Allie Perez all had a big night on the boards.

Kendyl Brooks and Chloe Brooks led Spotswood with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Mustangs will try and keep the momentum going Tuesday when they hit the road to take on high-scoring Orange County in Monticello’s Jefferson District opener.
