Monticello volleyball edges Fluvanna 3-2 in thriller

Monticello needed everything it could squeeze out of its lineup Tuesday night as the Mustangs edged out Fluvanna County 3-2.

 

The Mustangs went into a 1-0 hole and then a 2-1 hole before climbing out and battling for a 25-19 win in game four and a 16-14 victory in the decisive game five.

 

Zimako Chuks, the school’s career kills leader, led the attack for Monticello with 16 kills. Katie Devine finished with 12 kills on the night for the Mustangs. Chuks also chipped in nine digs while Devine had five aces.

 

Allie Perez had a solid all-around night for Monticello with 41 assists, eight digs and three kills from her spot as the squad’s setter. Brooke Tegethoff came up with nine digs, Moneka Lawson notched nine kills, Makysha Brock unleashed six aces and five kills while Mariah Brown put together five kills.

 

Fluvanna showed an incredible amount of fight in the narrow loss as a young, rebuilding squad continues to improve. Kate Stutz’s 38 assists and six kills triggered the offense. Haley Dillon finished off 12 kills and also made a trio of blocks while Abby Sherman and Christina Walker had six kills each.

 

Monticello (9-8) travels to take on Louisa Thursday while the Flucos host the Jefferson District’s first place squad Albemarle the same night.
