Mustangs volleyball sweeps Cyclones

Monticello’s volleyball team completed its season sweep of Eastern View on Monday night thanks to 17 aces in 3-0 win, 25-15, 25-6, 25-18.

After taking an early 5-point lead in game one, the Mustangs found themselves in a battle tied at 11. However a 10-1 run fueled by four straight aces allowed Monticello to take a more than comfortable lead before taking the first set.

The momentum from game one carried over into the second as the Mustangs rolled out to a 10-1 start and this time the Cyclones were able unable to make it close with Monticello cruising to victory to set up game three.

Once again the Mustangs built up a 5-point lead at 10-5, but quickly made it 16-6 thanks to some crafty kills from setter Mariah Williams. Eastern View closed the gap to as little as four at 18-14, but that was as close as it would get as Monticello took seven of the next 11 points to wrap up the match.

On the night, the Mustangs had 17 aces with Molly Relken leading the way with five and Charlotte Devine and Brittany Scott nipping behind at four each. Relken also led her team in kills with 11. Scott and Emily Evan each pitched in six kills. Mariah Williams finished with 19 assists. Trystam Carr led the defense with eight kills.

Monticello (7-1) hosts St. Anne’s-Belfield on Thursday at 7 p.m.
