Nelson beats Chatham to reach highest win total in more than a decade

Nelson County football has found itself in its fair share of shootouts this season, but Friday they left little doubt with a 35-19 win over Chatham at home.

Nelson is back at .500 on the year after building a 21-7 lead before halftime with one of its strongest defensive performances to date. The Governors’ fourth win gives them their highest win total since 2007 when Nelson went 5-5.

Felix Rodriguez led that attack with 12 total tackles and made a huge special teams play with a 55-yard return for a touchdown on a kickoff just seconds after Chatham had pulled within a score at 21-13 with 7:25 to play.

Brandon Jamerson terrorized the Chatham backfield with two sacks. Kavin Carter also had a sack while making six tackles of his own. Alex Duvoli and Bryson Ramsey each had six tackles as well.

Offensively, it was a slower night than the Governors have become accustomed to, but George Brown rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns while Rodriguez added another 75 yards and a score. Aveon Tabb also notched a rushing touchdown.

Brown went 8-for-15 for 91 yards on the night passing, finding Brice Wilson for six catches and 35 yards as well as Jamerson for three catches and 48 yards.

Nelson (4-4) will travel to Campbell Friday as the Governors continue to try and fight their way into the playoffs in Region 2C.
