Orange field hockey shuts out Fluvanna

On Thursday night, Orange County’s field hockey went to Fluvanna looking for a road win to add to their season resume.  They left Fluvanna after cruising to a 6-0 victory over the Flucos.

“I thought the girls did a great job tonight, they did a great job passing the ball, moving up the field and finding the net,” said Orange coach Tracy Munger.  “We’ve missed some opportunities in some past games with not getting some shots on goal, so we’ve been working on that and they did a great job of that.”

The Hornets did not take long getting out in front, as they got two early goals in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead.  The Hornets also controlled possession for a large amount of the quarter, something that would continue throughout the game.

In the second quarter, the Hornets added three goals from Kylee Dabney, Anna Bourke, and Riley Twyman to help take a commanding 5-0 lead at the half.  The team played some very good defense as well, with Katherine Parks recording five saves.

“We (had) a lot of great passing combinations — we did play a little slow but in the long run we played great and we’re a great team and we put that together on the field,” said Twyman.

The Hornets added one more goal in the final quarter of play to take the 6-0 win.  However, the Flucos played tough and kept going until the final buzzer, showing the development that has taken place within the program in just its third season of play. The Flucos beat Louisa County 3-1 back in mid September for the program’s first-ever victory.

“For the people who have been here all three years, they know the transition, when we started three years ago unfortunately the slaughter rule, you have to play three quarters, so even though the rule is six we had games where the scores were like 14-0 because you had to wait,” said Fluvanna coach Jenny Payne.  “But now we’re at least in games, we’ve had like three slaughter rule games, so we’re at least getting to play four quarters.”

The Hornets will travel to Monticello on Tuesday, while the Flucos will look to regroup hosting Highland Springs on Monday.
