Patriots fall to Forge in CD finals

It’s not exactly how they hoped the fourth meeting would go. Having split the regular season series and fallen in a tie breaker last week, the Albemarle volleyball team had its roughest showing against archrival Colonial Forge on Thursday night in the Commonwealth District championship, with the Eagles winning 3-0, 25-9, 25-18, 25-16.

Forge completely cruised through the first set, but Albemarle was able to rebound for the bulk of the second, tying the game at 17-17. But eight of the last nine points in game two went the Eagles’ way to give them a 2-0 jump.

The Patriots tried to get it going but were unsuccessful in the third and final game with Forge enjoying a comfortable lead most of the last set.

Sydnie Kostelac was one of the few Albemarle players to succeed on offense. Kostelac hit .400 on the evening. Senior Megan Napolitano had a pair of aces, but no Patriot had more than six service points.

The Patriots earned a Northwest Region bid by winning their CD semifinal match on Tuesday. Albemarle travels to Leesburg to face Heritage in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
