Patriots’ Strauss ties school record, Albemarle sweeps Stafford

As it hits the home stretch of the regular season, the Albemarle volleyball team put together a 3-0 sweep against a fiest Stafford squad, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22.

Albemarle was able to overcome a handful of mistakes in the first and second games thanks in large part to Colleen Marhsall and Stephanie Strauss who led the Patriot attack as well as Jessica Block and Savannah Morse at the service line.

In the third set Albemarle’s offense got rolling, but the Indians defense put up a strong fight as Megan Napolitano and Marshall hammered away, but a service point run by Block closed out the closest game of the match.

With her four blocks Stephanie Strauss tied the Patriots single season block record with more than a handful of regular season games left to play. Block also moved up on the Patriots school record charts. The sophomore registered 26 assists and is now in sixth place for most helpers in a season after passing her older sister Sam who graduated in 2006.

Marshall’s nine kills were a career best. Strauss tallied six kills while Napolitano put forth six of her own. Block had 12 service points with Morse coming in at seven. Sarah Terlesky had a game high dig total of seven.

Albemarle will host Colonial Forge on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the rights to first place in the CD. A win would give the Patriots a two game lead over the arch rival Eagles.
