Playoff Update: Covenant soccer, Western field hockey advance

Covenant’s boys soccer team will square off Friday for a state title after upending Trinity Christian Thursday night in the VISAA D2 state semifinals thanks to Soren Scott’s goal in double overtime.

 

The Eagles will face No. 5 seed Seton as Seton continued a Cinderella run that includes a 2-0 win over North Cross in the quarterfinals and continued with a 1-1 win in penalty kicks over top-seeded Steward.

 

Western field hockey stays alive

Western Albemarle’s field hockey team managed to overcome an early deficit and hold off George Mason 3-2 in the Region 3B consolation game to earn a spot in the Class 3 state quarterfinals.

 

The recently-crowned Jefferson District player of the year Erica Repich scored the first two goals for Western Albemarle while Mallory Greene had the decisive third goal off a Sophie Lanahan assist. Western held a 10-7 advantage in shots over the Mustangs and Western keepers Addie Patterson and Emily Sposato combined for five saves, surrendering one goal each.

 

Western volleyball falls to Rustburg

Western Albemarle’s volleyball team’s season ended at the hands of Rustburg on the road Thursday night in the Region 3C semifinals.

 

Western fell 3-0 after an incredible 33-31 loss in a game one marathon. Rustburg closed the door after that first game, winning 25-19 and 25-14 to wrap up a Class 3 state tournament berth and a spot in the region championship game.

 

Caity Driver had seven kills and Bella Plummer had four kills for the Warriors.  Annabella Pandelli finished with 19 assists and Amber Parker had 19  digs while Sarah Rhea chipped in 6 digs. Amelia Nichols and Amber Parker each had 2 aces.
