Football season is coming.
That’s made clear every year as soon as the VHSL releases its master football schedule, which came out Wednesday afternoon.
With the newly-expanded Jefferson District in its first year, more local teams will be playing each other than ever, with Albemarle and Orange County moving into the JD and taking on a more locally-oriented slate than when the two played in the old Commonwealth District.
We’ve put together the full slates below along with the team’s new postseason alignment in parentheses next to the school name. Each Class 1-6 is split into either north/south or east/west halves. To qualify for the playoffs, each team will have to be in the top 16 of that grouping according to the power rankings, with 32 total teams in each Class battling for a state title.
Also, here are five games on this slate we’re really looking forward to in 2013:
9.13.2013: Fork Union Military Academy at Monticello
It’s a rare matchup of private and public school powerhouses, with the Blue Devils coming to Mustang country. This one should be solid.
9.27.2013: Orange County at Western Albemarle
The Hornets open their return campaign to the Jefferson District with a trip to Crozet where two teams that have put together some classics over the year will lock up.
9.27.2013: Goochland at Buckingham County
The Bulldogs and Knights’ matchup is starting to become an annual classic, and we got a second edition last season when they met in the Sectional semifinals. But with realignment, if they met in the playoffs again it’d be for a state title.
10.4.2013: Western Albemarle at Albemarle
This rivalry is almost always a classic and the Patriots will be looking to avenge a 21-12 loss in the cross-county rivalry. It also counts as far as the new Jefferson District title, which should give an already tense atmosphere a little extra juice.
10.18.2013: Madison County at William Monroe
The Mountaineers and Dragons are still in the same district, but they won’t compete for a state title as the Mountaineers remain in Class 2 while the Dragons get pushed up to Class 3.
