Tournament Roundup: Blue Ridge, Miller girls, Tandem boys win conference titles

Blue Ridge and Miller have faced off four times now this season, with another potential matchup in the VISAA Division II tournament coming up. It is safe to say that the Barons and Mavericks know each other well.

And for the fourth straight time, Blue Ridge came out on on top.

Blue Ridge beat Miller for the fourth time, winning 66-57 in overtime Saturday night at Roanoke College to win the VIC Division I title.

The Barons’ Aamir Simms led the way with an explosive 22 points and 15 rebounds while Josh Colon scored 16 points and dished out five assists at the point. Sardaar Calhoun had 12 points and three rebounds.

The All-VIC squads were announced after the game with Colon taking home player of the year honors while Cade Lemcke won the conference’s coach of the year award. Simms and Darius McGhee also earned first team honors. Miller’s Aundre Hyatt made first team All-VIC. Calhoun was a second team pick for Blue Ridge while Dae Dae Heard and Deshaun Wade made second team for the Mavericks.

 

Tandem Friends wins DAC championship

Tandem Friends’ boys basketball team edged out Quantico 62-61 Saturday to win the Delaney Athletic Conference championship.

The win wrapped up an undefeated record in the DAC for the Quakers. Latrell Winkey scored 23 points and hit the go-ahead shot with three seconds to play. Winkey was named the DAC player of the year while Rodes Jarman was a first team All-DAC selection and Tandem’s Robert Jordan earned coach of the year honors.

 

Miller girls take home conference title

The Miller girls basketball team beat Carlisle 38-36 to win the Blue Ridge Conference championship Saturday. 

Miller’s Secret Bryant picked up BRC player of the year honors while Jamex Braxton was named the conference coach of the year.
