VHSL Region Wrestling Roundup 2.15.20: William Monroe, Goochland, Madison and Albemarle wrestlers advance to states

William Monroe’s wrestling team finished fourth as a team at the Region 3B championships and advanced five wrestlers to the Class 3 state championships in Salem.

 

Kaleb Doshier’s runner-up finish at 126 pounds and Connor Marcotte’s second place run at 220 pounds led the way for the Dragons, who finished behind champion Skyline, runner-up Brentsville and third place Warren County. Doshier, just a sophomore, had a pin and a 7-1 decision before falling by pin in the final. Marcotte, another sophomore, ran off two pins before getting pinned in the championship match.

 

The Dragons’ other state qualifiers were Chris Taft who finished third at 138, Connor Redieske who took fourth at 132 and Ethan Marcotte who took fourth at 285. Monroe’s other placers were Joe Hale who took fifth at 106, Johnny Walcutt who nabbed sixth at 182 and Joseph Willis who took sixth at 195.

 

Goochland finished seventh as a team and vaulted a pair of wrestlers into the state tournament. Connor Duncan took third at 220 to grab a spot in the state tournament and Reese Vincent took fourth at 138 to earn a shot at a state title. Five other Bulldogs got on the podium, with Grant Heidel taking sixth at 132, Max Moreno fifth at 145, Cory Vincent fifth at 152, John Daly sixth at 170 and Ethan Ford fifth at 195.

 

Region 2B Championships

Madison County finished sixth as a team at the Region 2B championships Saturday, with a pair of individual championships leading the way.

 

Sophomore Jacob Sacra (39-3 on the year) won the heavyweight title with a first period pin. He’ll compete in the Class 2 state tournament in Salem next week.

 

Sam Pequignot won the 113-pound individual title with an 8-3 decision over Clarke’s Colin Moran. Pequignot will compete in the state tournament next week in Salem.

 

Christian Corbin finished as the region runner-up and will also advance to the state tournament along with Jack Bourdon who took third at 138 and Evan Sabine who finished fourth at 120.

 

Region 5D Championships

 

Albemarle finished seventh in the Region 5D championships and one Patriot qualified for the Class 5 state tournament. Nolan Pitsenberger took fourth at 152 pounds to punch his ticket to the state tournament.

 

Sam Freire finished sixth at 106, Ryan Heathcock took sixth at 113, Sutton Veliky took sixth at 132, Ben Vales took sixth at 138, Andrew Edwards took sixth at 160, Jasper Hopkins took fifth at 170, Alex Freire took fifth at 182 and Hector Hernandez took fifth at 220
