Wagner anchors Orange County in win over Western

Dillon Wagner’s near no-hitter carried Orange County to a 2-0 victory Friday night against Western Albemarle.

Wagner actually had a perfect game going until the sixth inning when he walked a pair of Warriors. Nick Kuzjak broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the seventh inning. Wagner surrendered just one hit and walked two.

Wagner relied heavily on his defense, striking out just two during the win. Zak Reninger, Orange’s rightfielder, made a diving catch on a Nick Pegan line drive that cut off a potential Western rally early in the seventh.

Dillon Via provided the ammunition for the other half of the pitching duel, striking out eight and walking just one. The Hornets scored in the fourth after reaching on an error. Derek Justice then gave the Hornets a little insurance in the sixth when he singled up the middle, reached second on a balk, stole third base and then came home on a double by Austin Roberts.

Western hits the road to take on Goochland Tuesday night at 6 p.m. Orange hosts Charlottesville at 7:30 p.m.
