Western Albemarle boys indoor track leans on 3200, pole vault to win Class 3 state title

Western Albemarle’s boys indoor track squad has so much depth in the distance events and the pole vault, that success in those disciplines were enough to carry the Warriors to a state championship Saturday with 70 points to runner-up Cave Spring’s 56.

Without a placer in the jumps and just a third place finish by Will Koester in the 1000 scoring in any running event shorter than the 1600, the Warriors locked up the title with distance and pole vault.

Joe Hawkes played a big part in that, winning the 3200-meter individual championship while taking third in the 1600. He also ran a leg of the 4×800 relay squad that took fourth along with Koester, Eric Wilson and Jack Eliason.

Eliason had a monster day too, taking fourth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600. Stuart Terrill was the runner-up behind Hawkes in the 3200. In the 3200 alone, the Warriors stacked up 23 points.

But the real haul came in the pole vault, where Jackson Smith won the event title with a clearance of 14 feet while Landon Smith was the runner-up. Then teammates Cooper Saunders, Ricky Weikle and Harley Davis all tied for fifth. That’s 27 points in the pole vault, 50 between the 3200 and the vault, just six behind Cave Spring’s total.

The Warriors also had an eighth place finish in the 4×400.

Fluvanna’s Jack Rice took eighth in the 1600.
