Western baseball advances past Waynesboro

Western Albemarle baseball is playing next week, thanks to another gem from Jack Maynard on the mound that sparked the Warriors to a 3-1 win over Waynesboro in the Conference 29 semifinals.

Maynard, the Jefferson District’s player of the year struck out 11 and walked only one while surrendering just one unearned run. He also had an RBI in the win, a go-ahead single in the fifth inning. The victory assures the Warriors (19-1) of a berth in next week’s Region 3A West tournament.

Western struck first in the fourth inning off an Eli Sumpter RBI single that brought in Sam Hearn, who was the courtesy runner for Maynard who’d drawn a walk.

Maynard is 9-0 on the season and has thrown eight complete games.

The Warriors will face Turner Ashby in the final at 6 p.m. at Broadway Thursday.
