Western baseball finishes sweep of Neslon

For the second straight game against the same opponent, Western Albemarle picked up a win while posting double digit runs, this time on the road against Nelson County, 11-4.

The Warriors were down to the Governors 4-3 when junior Daniel Kuzjak laid down a leadoff bunt in the sixth to reach first base safely. Senior Tanner Knight followed that with a second straight bunt single. Sophomore Eli Sumpter was able to put both runners in scoring position on a sacrifice fly that set up a big time hit from Kurt Adcock. The senior’s double to the gap scored his underclassmen counterparts. Western tacked on five more runs of insurance to secure the come-from-behind win. Adcock also picked up the win on the mound, coming on in relief in the third inning and put together a 2-hit 5-strikeout day where he did not allow a run.

Western had a trio of players with multiple hit games including Steve Mangrum, John Mark Mastakas and Jack Maynard.

Western (2-0) heads to R.E. Lee today at 5 p.m.
