As far as debuts on the mounds go, Andrew Barrese’s went about as well as the Western Albemarle junior could have hoped.
Barrese struck out eight and threw a five-inning no-hitter Wednesday night to lift the Warriors past a Charlottesville squad riding high from an upset of Fluvanna County, with Western cruising 10-0 over the Black Knights.
Western got going in the first inning, building a 6-0 lead with a lot of help from Charlottesville’s two errors, a pair of walks and a couple of hit-by-pitches. Isaac Sumpter, Trevor Vernon and Michael Holzwarth each knocked in two runs with Vernon connecting on a double. Jacob Lively, Brandon Thomas and Barrese also notched an RBI each.
Western faces a quick turnaround as they host Fluvanna County, who edged Albemarle 1-0, Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. The Black Knights will travel to Orange at 7 p.m. Friday.
