Western boys and girls swimming sweeps Region 3C qualifier

 

Western Albemarle’s boys and girls swim teams picked up wins at the Region 3C qualifier Friday night at Brooks YMCA while the Warriors, Monticello, Fluvanna and Charlottesville sorted out what swimmers qualified for the Region 3C meet. 

 

The Western girls edged out Monticello 174-160 led by Virginia Smith and Julie Addison and strong depth in several events. The Warriors won the 400 free relay while Smith won the 200 free and took third in the 100 free. Addison won the 200 IM while Elle Schundler took second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 IM. The Warriors snagged the two through six spots in the 100 fly, showcasing their depth that helped lead them to a state championship a year ago. 

 

Noa Steven and Grace McCardle took second and third in the 100 backstroke and Lilly Fitzpatrick was second in the 100 breaststroke to round out the bulk of the Western scoring.

 

Hot on the Warriors’ heels was the Monticello girls squad with typically big time performances from UVa commitments Izzy Bradley and Athena Vanyo leading the way. Bradley won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke while Vanyo took home the 100 fly. Elisabeth Bendall got in on the act with a win in the 100 breaststroke and a second place finish in the 200 IM and Kate Jordan won the 500 free. Eloise Wear took second in the 100 free while Allisan Bendall took second in the 500 free and third in the 100 breaststroke. 

 

The Mustangs also won the 200 medley and 200 free relays with Bradley Vanyo swimming legs of each. Marian Mithqal swam on a pair of relays for the Mustangs including the 200 medley champions. 

 

For the Fluvanna County girls, Abby Fuller won the 100 free and took second in the 50 free. For the CHS girls Zoe DeGuzman took fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 100 backstroke.

 

On the boys side, defending state champion Western Albemarle rolled, ringing up 214 points to outpace second place Fluvanna’s 119 points. The Warriors won all but one event, sweeping the relays and posting different victors in each of the other events. Sam Johnson won the 200 freestyle, Matthew Heilmann won the 200 IM and Simon Wray won the 50 freestyle. Jackson Schundler got a win in the 100 fly, Jonathan Alexander won the 100 freestyle and Noah Johnson won the 100 backstroke.

 

Henry Addison took second in the 100 backstroke, Anthony Garono took second in the 50 free and Peyton Wray was second in the 500 free.

 

Fluvanna’s Ahmad Woodson won the 500 freestyle and grabbed second in the 200 free for the Flucos while Hunter Strickland took second in 200 IM. The Flucos took second through fourth in the 100 free with Tyler Harris, Jacob Ondek and Austin Fairbanks taking those spots.

 

For Charlottesville Harrison Greenhoe took third in the 50 free and 100 backstroke.
