Western boys avenge loss to Fluvanna with road win

Six days ago, Western Albemarle’s boys basketball team played in their season opener, dropping one to Fluvanna. Friday night, they got some quick revenge, picking up a 57-44 win over the Flucos.

“We’ve come a long way even though it’s only been a week just because last week we only had five practices and no games and my hat’s off to them (Fluvanna) I thought they played really well last week,” said Western coach Darren Maynard. “We’ve just grown leaps and bounds because we’ve got some games under our belts.”

Right from the beginning, the Warriors used their defense and their size advantage really well, causing turnovers, getting in passing lanes, and getting easy buckets in transition. With their size advantage, they were able to get the ball deep in the paint, getting close looks at the rim. Looks that guys like Lucas Farmer took advantage of as he scored 18 points and pulled down seven reboudns to lead the Warriors.  Senior guard Andrew Shifflett also had a big performance with 15 points, five boards and three assists on the night. Isaac Sumpter chipped in 10 points and a pair of steals.

“It’s all our game plan, coach Maynard and coach Hughes really put in a good game plan for the shooters they have tonight, and we executed in the second half really well,” said Shifflett.

The Flucos didn’t go down easy, as they fought back throughout the game, closing the gap to one possession at times. Maurice D’alessandro helped lead the charge, ending up with 14 points to lead his team. John Rittenhouse also had a standout performance, hitting three three-pointers and scoring 13 points.

Western’s length and defense proved to be too much for the Flucos to overcome, as the Warriors extended their lead back to double digits in the second half and never looked back.

“We work really hard on defense, we’re known for our defense, we’ve been playing packline before it was ever called packline,” said Maynard. “We get after you and that’s what we hang our hat on.”

After the win, and a big win against their rival Albemarle earlier this week, the Warriors don’t have any time to relax with Monticello coming to Crozet Saturday.  The Flucos don’t have much time to regroup either, as on the same day they will host Goochland in a rematch of their season opening win over the Bulldogs.
