Western field hockey keeps momentum going against Monticello

Western Albemarle took its lumps early season with a young roster that lacked the Warriors’ traditional star power after the graduation of Olivia Hajek.

But since the Warriors entered Jefferson District play, they’ve been on a roll.

That roll continued Thursday night when Western picked up a 3-0 victory over Monticello.

The Warriors struck first with 15 minutes left in the first half when Alex Brown broke through for the first goal. Monticello then managed to keep things close for the middle part of the game before Western added a pair of late goals in the second half, when Brown scored again and Kate Barlow also got in on the act.

Western’s victory sets up a clash of the Jefferson District’s two remaining unbeaten squads, the Warriors and Charlottesville, at CHS Tuesday. The Mustangs get a chance to bounce back against Albemarle at home the same night.
