Western girls lacrosse cruises past Monticello

Western Albemarle girls lacrosse is intent on starting games fast, making sure they’re on top before their opponent surges, an approach that should work well in a sport where runs are a part of nearly every single game.

“We’ve been working on starting out really excited and really hyped in the first few minutes,” said Western’s Mallory Greene. “I think we did really well on that in this game..”

That fast start never really stopped Tuesday night as Western jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime and cruised to a 21-4 final over Monticello.

Greene poured in six goals in the win while Mattie Shearer notched five goals and also dished out three assists. Western’s speed on offense gave the Mustangs all kinds of problems from the opening draw and the Warriors won a string of those draws to open the game that helped provide them with a 17-10 advantage on the draw in the game. That early run at the draw poured gas on that early run.

“The momentum of that is obviously a huge factor in the success we have on offense,” Greene said. “When we get those draws our adrenaline is up and it’s pumping — it’s really fun.”

Libby Carbo had a big night as well with two goals and three assist while Margaret Craytor scored twice and had a pair of assists. Sophie Lanahan also chipped in two goals and an assist while freshman Reeve Goldstein had two assists.

The Warriors got a goal each from Percy Mascotte, Khaki Harris, Katherine Alhusen and Libby Janucik.

With the early run it took awhile for the Warriors to actually play defense and that unit started with a pretty heft advantage before being forced to make any stops. But when Monticello, a squad that’s rebuilding this season after absorbing significant losses over the last two graduating classes, did gain control in the first half, the Warriors’ defense was up to the task, holding prolific scorer Alison Swartout to one goal and Taylar Hackney to two while Kendall Gibson had one goal.

“We play man-to-man, we always want to be big and keep our stick up,” Greene said. “Communication is always big on defense, we work on that a lot. We’re just trying to stay locked down on our girls.”

Hackney led the Mustangs with five draw controls, Swartout grabbed three draws.

Western will take on Fluvanna Tuesday night at home while Monticello will host Albemarle the same night.
