Western survives Fluvanna on the road to stay unbeaten

Fluvanna County wasn’t afraid to pull out all the stops in its final game of the season, running an assortment of trick plays and atypical formations.

But Western Albemarle still had too much for the Flucos and picked up a 40-28 win to stay unbeaten on the year.

Western built a 33-14 lead in the first half on the strength of some solid defense and the balanced offensive attack that’s been powering the unbeaten Warriors all season. But Fluvanna rallied, with a late first half touchdown and a score on the opening possession of the second half.

Western ended the rally there though, locking down Fluvanna from that point on as the defense stood its ground. The offense extended the lead in the fourth quarter on the last of Kent Henry’s four rushing touchdowns and finished off the Flucos.

Henry checked in with another big-time night, rushing for 106 yards on 17 carries as the Warriors continue to expand their commitment to the ground game. He threw for another 232 yards and found Steven Hearn for 101 of those. Hearn, the squad’s third-leading receiver, had to step his game up with Central Virginia’s second-leading pass catcher Daniel Kuzjak sidelined with an injury. Hearn proved up to the task as he helped keep the offense clicking.

Nic Drapanas finished with 54 yards and a touchdown receiving and Trevor Harlow had 56 yards through the air.

Fluvanna got a big-time night from Dashon Tibbs in his final game as a high school quarterback. The senior rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown and threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns while completing 17 of 33 pass attempts.

The Flucos completed both a running back and wide receiver pass, with Jovan Burton and Jalen Harrison connecting, respectively on the two gadget plays. Harrison hit Jesse Van Dyke for an 80-yard touchdown on his pass. Harrison also had 89 yards and a touchdown on six catches.

Fluvanna’s season ends with the loss, ending a second straight season with just a pair of wins at 2-8. Western Albemarle moves to 9-0 and gets a chance to complete the unbeaten regular season on its home field Friday against Louisa County. The Warriors are still currently the top-seeded squad in Region II, Division 3, but could be overtaken by Warren County or Skyline even with a win next week.
