Woodberry knocks off Collegiate in Prep League opener

Woodberry Forest picked up right where it left off in Prep League play as the 2011 champions put together a strong third quarter and held off a late Collegiate charge for a 23-15 victory Friday afternoon.

The Tigers’ defense, bolstered by the return of Doug Randolph, stood strong with a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery, including Will Tucker’s pick in the fourth quarter that helped Woodberry seal the victory.

The defense held Collegiate to just 47 yards on the ground on 22 attempts as the Cougars tried to spread it out. Wilton Speight, Collegiate’s star quarterback, scored once through the air and once on the ground while throwing for 222 yards. Woodberry’s secondary managed to force him into a 13-for-35 completion ratio.

The Tigers rolled up 286 yards on the ground with H.T. Minor’s 161 yards on 14 carries accounting for the bulk of the yardage. Christian Asher and Hunter Etheridge also got into the act with 39 and 45 yards respectively.

Randolph also got in the mix offensively with a 40-yard touchdown catch from Etheridge, who was efficient with a 10-for-14 afternoon for 117 yards.

Woodberry steps out of Prep League play next week with a Friday afternoon battle against Landon in Maryland at 4 p.m.
