It seems like pitchers are almost always ahead of batters in the first couple of weeks of baseball season, and Albemarle’s Will Coleman and Fluvanna’s John Glasscock definitely looked that way as they locked up in a pitcher’s duel Monday night to open Jefferson District play.

Coleman and the Patriots prevailed, with Albemarle picking up a solid 2-0 win in Albemarle’s season opener against the Flucos.

Coleman struck out 11 and gave up just one hit in 6.1 innings before he surrendered a pair of walks in the seventh, giving way to Garrett Williams who closed the door on a Fluco rally with just four pitches, striking out the first batter he faced before Jack McMullan picked off a baserunner at first to end the game.

The Patriots’ two runs came in the second and sixth innings, with Austin Bowen hitting an RBI double to right to score Alex Duval. Duval extended the lead in the sixth inning with a single to right to knock in Gordon Duval.

Alex Duval had a solid day at the plate in the defensive battle, going 2-for-3 with the RBI and the run. Connor Propes went 1-for-3, Bowen was 1-for-1 with the double and drew a pair of walks.

Fluvanna’s Glasscock went 4.1 innings, struck out five and gave up just three hits and two walks for Fluvanna, with Nathan Gragg finishing the game, giving up one run in his 1.2 innings. Gragg had the Flucos’ lone hit.

Albemarle will look to keep things going Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the road against Stafford while Fluvanna will look to bounce back on the road against Louisa County Thursday.
