Monroe baseball blows past Charlottesville

Sometimes it just takes a few games to get the offense rolling.

William Monroe baseball definitely got it going Monday night.

The Dragons exploded for 19 runs in a 19-5 win over Charlottesville thanks to 13 hits and a pair of three-RBI nights from Lance Williams and Colter Foster.

William Monroe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and then blew the game open with a five-run second and a seven-run third. That 14-1 lead was more than enough to vault the Dragons to victory.

Charlottesville tried to extend the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Monroe managed to close the door on the Black Knights. Lance Williams, Waylon Cheek and Elliott Inzana combined for the win on the mound, with Williams striking out three, Cheek four and Inzana two. The trio gave up just two walks. Monroe committed four errors as a team, though Charlottesville made six critical mistakes defensively.

Williams went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in the three runs while Foster went 3-for-4 with a double and the three RBI. Jamal Neal scored three times for the Dragons and Gauge Jenkins scored twice and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Talan Shifflett went 2-for-2 while Jayden Kirby and Kaleb Doshier each knocked in two runs.

The Dragons (2-1) will try and avenge a loss last week to Western Albemarle Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Charlottesville will travel to E.C. Glass Thursday at 7 p.m.
