William Monroe girls basketball got going fast Tuesday against Monticello in a 57-26 win in the first round of the Daily Progress Holiday Hoops Classic.
McKinley Carpenter, Ella Weaver, Mia Johnson and Avery Shifflett poured in 21 points together in the first frame and built a 21-2 lead over the Mustangs with some lockdown defense.
Shifflett spearheaded that defensive effort with seven steals while Carpenter had five steals on the day to go with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Monroe managed to clamp down on Monticello’s Dylan Wood who has been explosive offensively of late.
Weaver led the offense with 20 points, with 10 of them coming in the third quarter. Kayla Britton had seven points and five boards while Mia Johnson finished with seven points.
Marisa Dyer led the Mustangs with eight points and Gracee Moss had six. Monticello recovered from a six-point first half to score 20 in the second half.
Monticello will play Albemarle in the consolation bracket Wednesday while the Dragons will face Covenant in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon.
